This past week was mentally and physically draining. Typically, I try to hide when I am not feeling well but I am not sure if that is working, most people can pick up on my energy. While at the doctors last week the nurses immediately knew that I was not feeling well. They quickly asked me if I was ok and my response was “oh, I’m just tired.” The nurses pointed out that I was not smiling and not as upbeat as usual. Their observation of my behavior struck me because I never thought they paid that much attention to me.
After having a conversation with my husband about addiction, I mentioned to him that most addicts think that no one is aware of their addiction. However, the only person who is not aware of that addiction is the addict. They will do anything to mask their addiction, but it is usually crystal clear to someone looking from the outside. I say this because as much as I try to hide when I am ill, it is noticeable to others because of the change in my behavior. My give away is the lack of smiling….imagine that!
If you recall the movie “The Truman Show” the audience had a front row seat into Truman's life. They knew everything about him and witnessed his every move. Once Truman’s behavior began to change slightly the producers knew something was off with him personally. I related my experience last week with the movie and realize that even when you think no one is paying attention there are certain things that people will notice about you and it sticks. You may think of this as invasive, but it could be lifesaving. While I was trying to have a poker face, others saw my pain and was genuinely concerned.
I encourage you to take the time and notice the little details about the people you encounter especially if it is frequently. Because I was not smiling on the day of my doctor’s visit it activated an alarm and honestly, I did not realize that I smiled that often. If you noticed something about someone that is a bit odd or off do not be afraid to ask if they are ok!
